Turkey started the new millennium with change and change has never lost momentum since then. It has not followed a linear path of progress though. From economic performance to democratic credentials, from civil-military relations to management of religion and from there to the country’s overall orientation in global geopolitics things have changed so fast that a broad variety of people and institutions felt compelled to revise their perspectives and positions on Turkish politics in this two-decade period. The last decade of 20^th century was less-than-fortunate for Turkey as it was loaded with economic and political turmoil. However, the country started to reform by the beginning of 21^st century under the rule of the newly founded Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, henceforth AKP) lead by a young and charismatic politician; Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Dr. Fatih Ceran is a physicist-turned-political scientist who is primarily interested in policymaking in security issues, democracy/democratization, mass/political communication, discourse analysis, modernity/ modernization, nation/state building and philosophy of science. His master’s thesis entitled “Modernization of Turkey and Its Influence on Civic Identity” served as a prequel to his PhD dissertation, “From De-securitization to Re-securitization: The Formation and Transformation of Turkey’s Justice and Development Party” from which this book has been morphed into. He has been involved in education, civil society activism, public relations and political translation works in different countries. He has done academic work in Beykent University in the past and is currently teaching at Haliç University in Istanbul.
